LIFE Programme
The LIFE Programme is a European Union financial instrument that promotes the development of environmental conservation initiatives. The programme consists of three thematic components, according to their objectives
LIFE-Environment finances innovative and demonstration actions in industry; demonstration, promotion and technical assistance actions by local authorities; and preparatory support actions for Community legislation and policies.
LIFE-Third Countries focuses on activities aimed at promoting sustainable development in third countries, establishing administrative structures in the environmental sector and nature conservation actions.
LIFE-Nature promotes actions for the conservation of natural habitats and wild flora and fauna of EU interest.
LIFE is regulated by (EC) No. 1655/2000 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 July 2000 concerning the Financial Instrument for the Environment (LIFE), published in the Official Journal L 192 of 28.7.2000.
In its first phase (1992-1995) LIFE was allocated a budget of 400 million euros, a sum which rose to 450 million euros in the second phase (1996-1999) and was substantially increased to 640 million euros in the third phase (2000-2004). Finally, LIFE III was extended (2005-2006) with a budget of 317 million euros, proportionally larger than the previous allocations.
