Temporary ponds forever!

LIFE Basses Temporary ponds are classified as priority habitats by the “Habitats Directive”. In the Mediterranean basin, their scarcity, fragility, singularity and exclusivity makes them richly deserving of such classification, for temporary pools are, without doubt, one of the most important habits in the Mediterranean region due to the enormous biodiversity they contain.

In view of this, the Island Council of Minorca is developing the LIFE-Nature Project “Conservation and management of temporary ponds on the island of Minorca”, known as LIFE Basses. This is the official website for the four-year project, which was launched in November 2005.
